What are lifting and bio-revitalising threads?
Until recently, the only effective method of treating cosmetic defects associated with the loss of skin firmness was a surgical facelift. Some people, however, do not want to undergo such an invasive procedure and may instead choose a new method of treatment – a non-surgical facelift using special threads. These threads are made of soluble polydioxanone (hence the name PDO threads), a biodegradable synthetic fibre. PDO threads can stimulate the production of collagen fibres and accelerate the division of fibroblasts. PDO threads can be divided into revitalising and lifting threads. Lifting threads are thicker than revitalising threads, and the effect of their application is more pronounced.
The use of lifting threads is aimed at a delicate but visible elevation of the skin. The principle of the treatment is different than in the case of a surgical facelift, during which part of the skin is cut. In addition to the mechanical lifting of the skin, the threads also cause the desired natural local skin response, in the form of healing with the production of new collagen fibres. Collagen fibres are vital in the formation of ageing processes because, with age, our bodies produce less and less collagen. The skin becomes thinner, sagging and wrinkled. Weakened skin cannot adequately support the underlying tissues, and the force of gravity pulls them down.
One of the main advantages of lifting and revitalising threads is the short convalescence period. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, and the patient can return home immediately afterwards. Some patients experience minor swelling, redness or pain after the procedure. The patient should be careful not to rub the face too hard for at least a week after the procedure. It is also recommended to use cold compresses, avoid physical exercise and sleep on your back for about a week after the surgery. It is forbidden to perform massages or warming treatments during that period.
Lifting and biorevitalising threads are safe for the patient; they do not involve the risk of scars, extensive bruises or heavy bleeding. In rare cases, patients may experience irritation in places where threads are applied, infection or the threads may become visible under the skin. In such situations, the threads can be easily removed from the patient’s body. Another advantage of the treatment is the fact that it is relatively low-cost compared to a surgical lift.
People who decide on thread lifting should have realistic expectations – the threads lift the skin of the face only by a few millimetres, therefore, after their application, the effect is much more subtle than in the case of a surgical facelift. The lifting thread treatment is recommended mainly for people with moderate skin firmness loss, aged 40-55 or older people who cannot undergo surgical lifting.
Due to the high safety of the procedure, PDO threads can be combined with other aesthetic treatments, such as botulinum toxin injections or administration of fillers based on hyaluronic acid.
